Fake it till you make it

Times New Viking
Wordless Music Series
June 27, 2008
Lowery Gallery of the Whitney Museum
NYC

It was way too crowded to get anything approaching a good shot of the band, so instead I offer a closeup of Beth Murphy's keyboard, specifically the electric green gaffer's tape scrawled with the words, "David Kilgour was here." Supercool. Possibly acquired during the last run of Yo La Tengo Hannukah shows where both Times New Viking and The Clean were openers.

Despite the fact that the show was put on by the Wordless Music Series, vocals were indeed uttered during the songs, although whether they were made up of actual words or fuzzed-out nonsensical wails is unknown. It was my first time seeing a musical performance at the Whitney and the venue was not acoustically ideal, especially for such a packed engagement. So it's hard to remark on exactly how the show sounded, however I can vouch for the extremely good-looking nature of the crowd. It was like a stylish young hip person convention in there!

ACME opened, performing selections from the string quartets of Jefferson Friedman.
